Attractors
The states a system always falls back into — whether helpful or not.
An attractor is a state towards which a complex system keeps drawing itself. As a marble in a bowl always rolls to the lowest point, so dynamical systems gravitate towards certain patterns — even when initial conditions differ.
Attractors are one of the central concepts in dynamical systems theory. They describe the stable behaviour of a system — the patterns that do not simply go away, even when the system is perturbed.
Three kinds of attractors
Fixed-point attractors are the simplest. The system comes to rest in one specific state. A pendulum that dampens out, a marble in a bowl, a body that returns to resting heart rate after exertion.
Limit cycles or periodic attractors are cyclical patterns. A heart that beats. Sleep-wake cycles. A seasonal depression that returns each winter. The system does not come to rest in one point, but in a repeated movement.
Strange attractors or chaotic attractors are the most fascinating. The system inhabits a region of its state space, but follows no repeated route. The motion is bounded but never quite the same — think of a butterfly that never flies the same path twice, yet always stays within the same garden. The Lorenz attractor (which one may have seen tracing itself on the home page) is the most famous example.
Healthy and unhealthy attractors
For mental health care the concept of an attractor is enormously useful, for many complaints behave as though they themselves have become attractors. A depression that does not yield, an addiction that returns again and again, an anxiety pattern that constricts the whole of life — these are states towards which the system keeps drawing itself, even when external circumstances improve. It is as though the "bowl" has become so deep that the marble can no longer climb out.

What that means for treatment
This thinking changes how we look at interventions. Some interventions work in the moment — they give the patient a better day, a better week. But once the stimulus is removed, the system falls back into its attractor. Other interventions work on the structure — they make the existing attractor less deep, or create an alternative state that also becomes attractive.
In depression this means: yes, antidepressants may soften symptoms, and yes, a holiday may bring relief. But as long as the underlying attractor is still there, the system falls back. What we therapeutically attempt — behavioural activation, meaning-making, social reconnection, sometimes medication — works best when it changes the landscape in which the patient lives, not only her temporary position within it.
The question for any clinician is thus twofold: which attractor is at work here? and what could change the landscape? Sometimes the answer to the second question is: little, at this moment. Sometimes opportunities open — a tipping point — at which a small intervention can dislodge the attractor after all. Recognising such moments is an important part of what complexity-aware work delivers.
