Control parameter
The dial you turn — not the outcome, but the condition that makes it possible.
A control parameter determines which dynamic pattern a system realises. It is not the pattern itself, but the condition that can tip one pattern into another once a critical threshold is crossed.
In thermodynamically open systems the control parameter usually refers to the energy supply — the degree of energising, activation or motivation of a system. In a more general sense it modulates the interaction between the components. Turned a little, often little changes; past a certain point a small further change can suddenly move the system into a new state. Think of water that remains liquid as its temperature rises, until at a hundred degrees it abruptly becomes vapour: temperature here is the control parameter, the state of matter the pattern.
Why we prefer to put it softly in mental healthcare
In psychological systems, unlike in physics, we rarely have direct access to the control parameters. We cannot set them on a dial. For this reason the clinical context speaks rather of an order transition than of a phase transition in the strict sense: the phenomenon seems related, but the careful wording acknowledges that we usually do not hold the underlying parameter in our hands.
Even so the concept is illuminating here. It shifts attention from the outcome to the conditions. What might act as a control parameter in a treatment — safety, meaning, activation, the quality of the working alliance — cannot be steered directly toward an end state, but it can be influenced in such a way that a reordering becomes more possible. To our impression, here lies one of the most fruitful lessons of complexity science for practice.
